New York Observed is an independent photography publication about the people, communities, and everyday life of New York City.
I’m Pilar Perez, a photographer originally from Montevideo, Uruguay. I immigrated to the United States more than 23 years ago and eventually found my way to New York.
I have always been interested in people: how we interact, how we build community, how we come together, and the small moments that reveal something about who we are. Photography became my way of paying closer attention to those moments.
New York Observed grew from that curiosity.
Through photographs, field reports, and occasional written stories, I document the city as I experience it, from its public gatherings and traditions to the smaller moments of everyday life.
My perspective is inevitably shaped by being an immigrant and by having spent much of my life learning new places from both the inside and the outside. I’m interested not only in the New York everyone recognizes, but in the smaller stories unfolding alongside it.
This is not intended to be a comprehensive record of New York. It is an ongoing observation of a city that is constantly changing, seen through one photographer’s eyes.
